This session will introduce participants to the basics of preserving digital materials, including the key concepts in the field and the steps that practitioners are taking to accomplish digital preservation tasks. Increasingly, these materials exist in digital form: either acquired through purchase or donation, or created by the institution as the output of digitization projects. Keeping these materials safe into the future means bringing together a set of managed activities involving people, resources, standards and practices, and software and hardware. This session will introduce participants to the basics of preserving digital materials, including the key concepts in the field and the steps that practitioners are taking to accomplish digital preservation tasks. There will be a focus on strategies for those just getting started in this exciting, rapidly-developing field. 
Participants will:
- Become familiar with the key concepts and standards in the field of digital preservation
- Be able to identify the steps and associated tools used to preserve digital materials 
- Leave equipped with a set strategies to get a digital preservation program started

He oversees the maintenance of the Scholars Portal Trustworthy Digital Repository and coordinates the Permafrost hosted digital preservation service for OCUL members.
